History of Pathways

Pathways Treatment Center was established in 1984 and has served over 5,100 patients and 3,500 family members. In 1984, a company from Tennessee rented space at the Virginia Baptist Hospital and started Pathways Treatment Center. A year later, Virginia Baptist purchased it. Centra Health Inc., the current owner of Pathways, was created in 1987, combining the Virginia Baptist Hospital and Lynchburg General Hospital systems. Throughout the 1980's we were a very traditional 28 day treatment center, but managed care became more aggressive with residential days. So, in 1990, the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) was established. Six years later, we developed and implemented gender specific treatment. Also, Pathways adopted a very evidence based treatment and adjusted capacity to address mental health concerns of patients. In 2004, we created the hotel model in response to continued issues with residential reimbursement. This component has allowed us to continue to have a residential program even though some insurance companies would not cover it.
